Elmer, a very personable roadrunner who greeted staff and guests who visited the aviary, and was known for bringing his keepers presents. A twig or a feather, or best of all a dead mouse, were favorite gifts. His lively personality and amusing antics could brighten the gloomiest day and he had many friends and admirers. Elmer was the victim of an incident on June 26th where it is believed he was injured so severely by a visitor that it was necessary to euthanize him. If you have any information on the incident, call the zoo at 620-276-1250 or Crimestoppers at 620-275-7807 or text GCTIP and tip information to 847411 (Tip411). Zoo staff is researching the possibility of adding surveillance cameras at the aviary, and contributions towards this project are welcome. The zoo staff wants to thank everyone for their outpouring of support regarding Elmer. He will be missed.
