The Lee Richardson Zoo began offering public giraffe feedings in May and they have been very popular with our guests. To accommodate rising summer temperatures, these weekend encounters will now take place in late morning until the weather begins to cool off. Currently scheduled from 1:30 to 2:30 on Saturday’s and Sunday’s, public feeding time will now take place from 11:00 am to noon. This will make the event more enjoyable for both guests and giraffes.
The weekend feeding encounters take place weather permitting and giraffes willing, and allow zoo visitors to purchase “keeper approved” food and experience a close encounter with the tallest land animal on the planet. Our trained volunteers guide you to a designated safe area where you can get up close and personal with Shingo and Juani, and witness all of the wonderful adaptations that these giants have developed for feeding. You’ll be hooked as they tower above you and reach out to wrap their 18” long prehensile tongue around your treat.
As you enjoy this unique experience, (as public feeding of the animals is generally prohibited for the health and safety of both guests and animals) you are also supporting the care of all the animals at Lee Richardson Zoo. All proceeds help maintain our zoo as a world class accredited facility. So head on down to the zoo this weekend and enjoy an encounter on the wild side.
