The role of this position is to support the Lee Richardson Zoo’s education division mission of inspiring appreciation and stewardship of the natural world. The successful candidate will be energetic, positive, creative, passionate about nature and animals, and have excellent communication and people skills (especially with children). They must also be self-motivated, reliable, prompt and a good team player. The aide will be supervised by the Education Managers.
Handle animal ambassadors (including small mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates) for on and offsite presentations, enrichment and training; monitor the health and safety of all animals while in use.
Lead formal and informal programs.
Research program and animal information.
Assist with special events.
Create program curriculum.
Inventory and maintain biofact collection and education supplies.
Review and update zoo informational files.
Attend meetings and training sessions as assigned.
Various other duties as required
18 years or older
High School Diploma, College Degree preferred
Provide a negative TB test
Good physical condition: able to lift 30 pounds and work in a variety of environments both inside and outdoors, occasionally spending several hours standing and walking, ability to stoop or bend frequently
Ability to drive variety of City vehicles
Pass background check and clean motor vehicle record
Willingness to work a flexible schedule averaging 15 hours/week, not to exceed a 30 hour/week annual average or 1000 hours per year total.
This is a paid part time position funded through grant monies. Continuation of this position beyond the 2014 year is likely but is dependent upon continued grant funding.
